Besides the ridiculously high prices, there was that god awful line you had to stand in when shopping for books. One college memory I don´t miss.
I don´t know how long they´ve been offering it… but Amazon.com offer used college books for sale. Its like they have a whole used book marketplace… which makes the prices much more competitive then you´ll see at the campus store.
I would suggest before buying anything on campus run a search on Amazon and see if they have any of the books listed on your syllabus. The earlier you look the better chance you´ll have a chance of finding one of the books you´re looking for.

PeteTheFreshman tips:
If you are going to buy your books try to get them from Europe. If you are buying the books new you’ll pay 1/2 to 2/3rds the price. Just make sure you get a bunch cause shipping will be hire.
If you wait till last minute to get the book (buy early will save but fuck it you have beerz to drink) don’t buy it on your way to class…. there were several classes where I went in with no book or didn’t have to buy the book till months in.
If you’re taking a math/chem/physics class check to see if the book has a previous edition. If the prof doesn’t collect or grade the homework then the older version with teach you the same stuff (entry level for those classes has been the same for the last 10 years at least)
