I am going to need some help on this one. I had always thought David Wygant was the inspiration for the movie “Hitch” with Will Smith. He has mentioned it many times in passing and a lot of people in the community seem to back the story. You can see how he talks about it on his site below.

Then in my recent web travels I came across an interview that Jordan Harbinger did from PickupPodcast and The Art of Charm for a site called Big Success. This is what Jordan had to say about it.

Seems that Jordan is saying that AJ’s relationship with the writer is what influenced the movie. Unless he was misquoted on the whole thing, but the article has been out over a month so I guess not.

I don’t know? Maybe it wasn’t based on either of them or anyone in this community…I’m confused, will someone please straighten this out for me?

I actually don’t know who is was based on but seeing this article reminded me of last night when I was telling people what I do and where I see myself down the road and they automatically said “Hitch for college kids/grads.” I take it as a compliment.

Plus, Will Smith is the man.

I can understand your confusion Michael…

But let me clarify this once and for all…

I am actually the real inspiration for Hitch, Tom Cruise’s character in Magnolia, Stifler in the American Pie movies, Telly from the movie Kids and Papa Smurf.

    There it is… case closed!

Will Smith is the man, although lately I have a love hate relationship with his new roles.

Weird. I recently saw a news clip where this guy, David Coleman, claims to be the inspiration for Hitch. Seems a lot of people want credit huh?

    Hey guys,

That quote looks odd. I thought it was an audio-only interview, and what I said was what is printed above, but I didn’t mean it like that. The movie is similar to what we do at The Art of Charm (as far as people unfamiliar with the community are concerned), but it’s not ABOUT The Art of Charm, or me. It’s also not about David Wygant. So, I guess you’re back to square one. :)

Though Jordan’s already given his stance on the issue, I wanted to talk about it from the movie studio side.

It’s pretty safe to assume that the movie is actually based on MANY different people. Why? Because they don’t want legal trouble. If the movie were to be entirely based on one person, that person would have right to be compensated for that. If they’re not, they can sue. That’s why writers and producers research from a variety of sources. By taking small elements from many different people, nobody needs to be compensated, and nobody can say “you’re hurting my business by putting all of my material out there for the public to see!”.

So the truth of the matter is mos likely that Hitch is based on David Wygant, and David Coleman, and many other people as well.
