Literally! Online dating has been growing in popularity since its beginning and it was only a matter of time before it spread to different cultures (which it has), but recently it has entered into a different species! Better yet it has moved to many species. I’m not talking about bestiality here, I’m talking about online dating for Zoo animals.
In the captive animal world, zookeepers have match-making down to a science. With the use of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium “studbooks,” more than 200 zoos nationally and some internationally have Web access to databases with detailed genetic and demographic analyses, as well as, historical records and the locations of every species on display.
Similar to human online dating services, zookeepers use studbooks to pair animals. This method ensures that the genetic variation of each animal is retained and close inbreeding can be avoided.
