The humble T-shirt is often unappreciated, but it is a great basic piece for your wardrobe. When you think of T-shirts, you may think of baggy white monstrosities, but a quality fitted T-shirt can actually be quite flattering.

It’s all about the neckline

Round-necked T-shirts are not the most interesting of garments, especially when the neck is quite high as you will often find with cheap and nasty T-shirts. Wearing a slightly lower neckline looks so much better, and gives the impression you have a sexy chest under your top- even if you don’t.  For a refreshing, trendy twist on the basic tee, wear a V-neck. Emulating the shape of a pelvic V, it gives shape to your torso and adds interest to your outfit.

Always go with fitted

Wear it well

T-shirts look so much better if they fit the wearer. Just because hip-hop artists wear baggy white T-shirts, doesn’t mean you should. Swimming in your T-shirt is not a good look.

As they are meant to be a casual piece, you want your T-shirt to be fitted, but not tailored. It should be about the length of your belt-line, but not much longer, and fit well in the shoulders.

Muted colors are best

A T-shirt is not an attention grabbing piece, it’s a basic which allows you to wear other, more exciting clothing in style. For this reason, it is useful to have T-shirts in seasonal, but muted colors. For the current fashions, T-shirts in colors such as grey and light blue will be great building blocks for your wardrobe.

T-shirt prints can make you look fat

If you’re one for wearing T-shirts with a graphic print on them, have a think about the aesthetic of the print before you commit to wearing a T-shirt. Graphic tees can enhance your shape or draw attention to aspects of your body that you’re insecure about.

A shorter guy can sneakily look taller by choosing tees with prominent vertical lines in the print. For example, the skyscrapers on a graphic of a city skyline can elongate you. Likewise, you can make yourself look more substantial by wearing prints with horizontal lines, such as a landscape. If you’re on the larger side, stay away from any prints which have horizontal lines as they will onto accentuate your girth.

What to wear a plain tee with

T-shirts are only appropriate for low-key situations, so you need a casual outfit to go with them. Chinos, particularly in a statement color such a burgundy or mustard, are complemented well by a plain T-shirt. If your T-shirt is colored or has a distinctive design, then dark colored skinny jeans are the way to go.

Unless you are layering and wearing a cardigan or jacket on top of your T-shirt, you should never pair a scarf with a tee. It looks funny as you are mixing light summer attire with a scarf more appropriate to the colder months.
