Everyone wants to be successful, and I don’t just mean in terms of financial wealth. In terms of relationships, hobbies, side projects, and any other endeavors, people universally desire a high standard of effectiveness resulting in pride and a sense of accomplishment.

Some people, though, aren’t willing to do what it takes to find success. They sit around and blame other people for their failures and claim that those who have found success were lucky or were born with some special quality that made it easy for them.

This is not the case. Success in anything results from the same approaches and attitudes. Here are 5 skills you absolutely must have if you want to be successful.

1. Strong Work Ethic

Master your domain

This one is kind of a no-brainer, but it is amazing how many people really don’t want to work for their dreams. Nothing is handed to you in this life. You really do have to dig in and put in the long, hard man-hours to develop skills and talents. If you’re doing something you love, the work doesn’t feel like work anyways.

2. Courage to Face the Possibility of Failure

A lot of people don’t embark on what they would truly like to do because deep down they have doubts about their abilities. You’ll never know if you don’t try. Having courage doesn’t mean not being afraid.

It means acknowledging the fear, but trying something anyways because it’s what you really want. You’ll always be most afraid of the things you really want. That’s all the more reason to look fear in the face and say, “I will not let you conquer me.”

3. Iron Resolve

Obstacles and setbacks will inevitably happen, no matter how hard you’re working. This is where determination and perseverance come into play. You have to get knocked down, get up again, get knocked down, and get up once again. Go listen to some Chumbawamba if that message isn’t loud and clear.

4. Belief in Yourself

You really must have a persistent faith in your own abilities to ultimately succeed. The mind is a powerful thing. If we truly think that we can do something, the stars are the limit. If you go through your whole life believing that you’re not good enough, you won’t be. Plain and simple.

5. A Sense of When to Move On

No matter how much you’d love to do something and work for it and believe, some things really aren’t meant to be. Not everyone can be a rock star or Olympic gymnast or an astronaut. You’ve got to understand when it’s time to admit defeat, cut your losses, and move on to the next passion. Don’t throw in the towel until you first give it all you’ve got, though.

Parting Words

That’s that. If you truly understand the meaning of these five items and have the discipline to apply them to your life, you will find success. So get out there and do something. Right now. Make something amazing happen. The world is yours.

Great post, messages like these can’t be spread enough…

    2. is very interesting to me, every time you want to do something significantly new, you need to commit “image suicide”… meaning it’s necessary to kill and burry the “self” you are so heavily invested in, before you can reach a new level

A nice mindset related to 3. is thinking “these roadblocks have been designed to stop OTHER PEOPLE… people who don’t want it as much as I do”

    5. is a really tough one… Something that might help determining to keep going or to quit is having clear reasons WHY you are going for a specific goal… If the reasons are not ego-validating and you truly feel like this is your thing, I would say keep going… But it’s a very touchy subject… interesting point though

An interesting point to add is you need to take full responsibility for everything that happens to you, for all the results you get… this involves stop blaming other people, forgiving people who you blame, …

I love these “inner game” kind of subjects, because they are translatable to any field you wish to improve in… Which is the reason I love to emphasis inner game tips and exercises atmy blog
