Odds of finding a threesome on 3nder

This app wants to be the catalyst to a sexual revolution, but does it deliver?

The dating app 3nder (pronounced “thrinder”) has been in the news recently because it acquired $500,000 from angel investors. The app is almost two years old — it was launched in early 2014 — but has it gained traction in the online dating app world?

?I wanted to create this minimal, futuristic product,” Dimo Trifonov, the app’s founder, told Re/code, via SFist. “All these sites for swingers, ‘have-a-threesome-dot-com’ and all this kind of crap ? they all use super-outdated technology. They have this scammy business plan where they create fake users to generate revenue from men, so this is how they survive … We create this thing that?s affordable, there?s nothing sexualized. We don?t have naked girls, we don?t advertise naked girls.?

What exactly inspired the 25 year old to create 3nder?

?My girlfriend and I were curious about threesomes,” he said, according to Vice. “So I created a teaser page [for 3nder] to see the reaction of our society. And so many people responded positively.?

Trifonov has parlayed that curiosity into an app that, he has told media outlets, can change the sexual culture around the world. 3nder also has a clearly defined purpose under which users interact and meet up, which differentiates it from other apps.

?[Tinder and other popular dating apps] have all sorts of people. People who just want to fuck, people who are looking for marriage, the love of their life,? Trifonov said, according to Re/code. ?The experience on Tinder, when you match with someone, you don?t really know what these people are doing there.?

But, 3nder seems to suffer from a common problem for niche dating apps: not enough users. Also, while I haven’t found any statistics that show a gender breakdown of users, it’s easy to imagine a lot a single men crowding the app looking for a relatively small population of women.

Also, 3nder is a “freemium” app, which means you can use its basic features for free, while additional feautures cost money. I don’t have much experience using this app personally, but here’s what they’re saying in Apple’s app store:

  • “Good concept and all, but you have to pay for EVERYTHING. I thought it was going to be more like tinder, which I love, but I’m not going to spend $11 just to see if MAYBE someone 200 miles away likes me.” – Keishakips (Oct. 28, 2015)
  • “Great concept but not many people on it in my area. Also the app constantly crashes. Needs some work for sure.” – Hector Zerroni (Oct. 23, 2015)
  • ?”I had some issues with it in the past, but now it works like a charm. Good job guys!” – rain2307 (Oct. 25, 2015)
