Hump Day Q&A: Natalina Maggio Has Our Attention
This thought may not enter your mind while walking out of a movie theater feeling like your hard earned $12 was stolen from you by one of the big studios, but the people who run Hollywood are really smart. A good example of how smart these guys are is actress/model/writer/voice-actor Natalina Maggio.
Aside from her stunning looks, Maggio possess a unique, high-pitch, comedic voice that earned this Orange County native her start in showbiz, doing voice-over work for Disney. The smart guys who make decisions in Hollywood knew that it wouldn’t be right to keep such a beauty locked up in a recording studio, though. Soon after she caught the eyes of casting agents and found herself on TV shows like “MadTV,” “All of Us” and “Life” as well as films such as, Our Family Wedding, Tic and Couples Retreat. This summer, Maggio can be found on the big screen in three summer blockbusters: Iron Man 2, Get Him to the Greek and Killers. I had the chance to listen to that unique voice as Natalina and I discussed having fun with telemarketers, writing screenplays, reading cue cards in the ocean, playing a character named “Persian Porn Star,” watching Jon Favreau DJ and much more.
What is the most common reaction you get from people the first time they hear your voice?
I get “Are you for real?” or “Can you come here and talk to my kids?” I can’t even go to the store. Once I open my mouth it’s just a ton of attention. “Whoa!” or “That is so cool” is another reaction. People will ask if I do voice-over work. On the phone, I always get “Is your mommy or daddy home?” I love messing with people especially telemarketers. If one calls, I’ll say “hang on, let me get my mom,” and then I’ll yell from the bathroom and flush the toilet.
You’re in Iron Man 2. I saw an interview you did a Comic-Con where you had some great things to say about working with Jon Favreau. What was it like working with him?
I love him, actually. I think he’s an awesome director. He’s so calm. He thanks and appreciates everyone who worked on the film, which is awesome. He’s so funny and really entertaining to be around. He likes to DJ, which is really cute. At the wrap party, he was DJing. You can tell he’s very talented. I was very impressed with the way he can put it all together and go about it with such a calm manner.
You’ve recently written a screenplay titled House of Lies as well as a kids’ television show, “DotNat.” How would you describe your writing style?
I really try to take things and experiences that I’ve gone through and add a twist to it. I try to fictionalize things with a moral or teach something. I try to write about things that I’m passionate about and things that I think are entertaining. It’s just a creative outlet for me, it’s my own little creative world.
When you Google your name one of the first things you’ll find is a video you did for the “Million Dollar Kissing Contest”. How difficult was it to nail your lines while standing in the water?
Oh my God, somehow that video ended up everywhere. I did that video for a friend of mine for charity. It somehow ended up everywhere. It was very difficult. He’s interviewing me on the fly. He’s got cue cards he’s holding up in the middle of the ocean, and they’re flying all over the place. Water is splashing all over me. I’m practically getting knocked over by waves. He’s the talented one. He’s somehow able to not drop his high-end camera into the ocean while holding up cue cards.
Also in my research I found that you played a character called “Persian Porn Star” in an episode of “Nip/Tuck.” How did that come about?
There’s this episode where this Persian guy who is basically being nominated for being the biggest dick. I played his girlfriend who is kind of excited about him earning this nomination. I didn’t know everything that was going to be going on until I was on set. All I really knew was that I’d be wearing some hot, sexy Christmas lingerie. Once I got there I got the rundown. It was hysterical. There was a Santa in a thong, they had little elves. It just got more and more interesting as the day evolved.
What’s one thing a guy should never do in attempt to get your attention?
I don’t like lying. I like an honest guy. I think you should just be true to yourself. I also don’t like guys who talk about themselves too much. It’s more interesting to see a person for who they really are. With good looking girls, guys feel like they have to impress you. The most impressive thing is a man who is so honest. What gets my attention with a man is funny. I love a guy who’s funny. I think it’s a lot more interesting to be around someone who can make me laugh. So I like a guy who can show me a good time, is entertaining, honest and funny. I love that.
What is an ideal setting to meet a guy?
I love meeting someone at work. I think work and activities and things you do outside of work. I don’t think you’re going to end up meeting a guy in a bar or a club that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with. I’m sure some people do but I like to meet people where I can find that we have something in common. I’ve met people on set. It’s great because you know you have something in common, yet you’re still doing different things and working on different projects. I think work is a great place to meet people. I think the gym is another great place. Or when you’re out with your friends. I think the best place to meet someone is at random, you can’t go out looking because it really is the most random places and random events where you find people.
