Hump Day Q&A: Joanna Angel is Not Your Porn Google

This week we’re lucky enough to bring you a Q&A with the “Queen of Punk Rock Porn,” Joanna Angel. We had the chance to chat on the phone with the writer, producer, director, model and AVN award-winning adult film star whose latest feature film, “Joanna’s Angels 3” will be released in September. The co-founder of the awesome website, BurningAngel.com, fills us in on the usefulness of her English degree, the challenge of making porn viewers laugh, how to have sex in a public bathroom and much more. Joanna also lets us know what the most annoying question in the world is and she’s not going to answer it because she’s not your porn Google. Feel free to ask her non-annoying questions on Twitter.

You and I have something in common. We both have degrees in English.

Oh really? The most useless degree ever! I liked doing it but I do wish now, because there are so many things that I want to learn about, that I would’ve taken something else. I didn’t see it as a privilege. I didn’t see it as a place where you have all these amazing things at your fingertips. It just seemed like a continuation of high school for me because I grew up in a town where everyone went to college. Sometimes I wish now I would’ve taken some business classes or graphic design classes but I was stubborn. I was like, ‘I just want to read.’ But that was almost 10 years ago, now. Sometimes I look back and go, ‘What did I even learn?’ English is so not tangible. You don’t really learn anything. You just learn how to analyze things. If I could go back and do it again, I’d definitely take some graphic design classes.

Mitch Fontaine, your partner, wanted to create a porn site that his mother could look at. Do you think your site BurningAngel.com is exactly what you guys were hoping it would be? Does his mom look at the site?

Actually his mom does look at the website. Fortunately, my mom does not. But that’s ok, she doesn’t need to look at it.

I think we have accomplished it. I think we’ve done something very tactful and very dirty at the same time and that’s not easy to do. Especially when you’re in the market like porn where everyone wants to make money and a lot of people think the obvious and easiest way to make money is to spill out anal, DP, gangbang whatever. So when you’re in a market like that there’s certain things you just have to do if you want to sell your porn but you still want to keep it kind of classy. And that is not an easy thing to do. I think we’ve accomplished it though. We’ve gone in a lot of different directions and we have a lot of other websites that satisfy viewers who just want to look at porn. We realized that not everyone wants to read band interviews but we’d never want to let that go so we added other websites.

I’m like a big perfectionist. I will never think work is done. That’s the thing with a website. It’s a living, breathing thing and you can always add to it, you can always make it better. I don’t think what we have is perfect but I’m happy with what we’ve created and we’ve done what we wanted to do.

The banner on the top of the site says “Nevermind Mainstream Porn.” Is there something about mainstream porn that bothers you? Is that why you created the slogan?

That slogan is not because I’m anti-mainstream porn. It’s part of branding. I want people to know what they’re looking at. People may be tired of looking at mainstream porn will enjoy the website.

There’s so much porn out there that it’s hard to put into a bottle what mainstream porn is, but I know that’s not what we do. I think when people think of mainstream porn they think of blonde hair, fake boobs, like really big porn houses and swimming pools and you’re casting couch style interviews with your quintessential striptease and some weird fishnet outfits. A lot of those things are hot and a lot of them work but it’s not what we do.

When you’re writing the script for your films, is making your audience laugh more important to you than turning them on?

It’s not more important. It’s more of a challenge. I definitely want everyone to be aroused, who watch my movies. People are going to have sex in my movies, no matter what. Ultimately, someone will get aroused. My main goal when I’m writing one of our big feature movies, you spend a lot of time on them. Every director in porn knows that it takes so much time to make a feature. I feel like people in porn don’t get enough credit. To shoot an hour’s worth of dialogue and then have to have sex is not easy. When you’re in a position where you want to make everything that happens in between the sex really good and you want the sex really good, you’ve got a challenge ahead of you. You’re going to need 15 hours of your day to shoot all this stuff. It’s hard to accomplish both.

I guess my main objective is that if I’m going to put time and energy and effort into making a porn movie with a plot, I want people to watch the plot and I don’t want them to fast forward through it. And if that means that everyone needs to be naked in the plot, I’m going to make them naked. And if I think that it needs to be so hilarious that you’re going to want to see it then I’ll make it hilarious.

If making people laugh was my only care in the world then I should probably be doing standup or making sketch comedy instead of making porn. So obviously making something sexy is very important to me but the laughter and the comedy is more of a challenge because most people will get aroused when they’re watching two attractive people fuck. It’s just going to happen.

I read that a turnoff of yours is guys hitting you up on MySpace to ask you how they can get into porn. Why is it such a turnoff?

It’s the most annoying question in the entire world. I don’t message Travis Barker from Blink 182 how to be in a fucking band. You just start a band. That’s how you get in a band.

It’s just an annoying question. I think it’s very common now because of Twitter and things like that, that porn stars suffer from being so available. We love talking to our fans so much. People take advantage of that sometimes. I’m here to answer questions to fans. I’m not an open source of information to teach someone or answer all of their unanswered questions about the porn industry. But sometimes that’s what people want.

I feel like people that porn is one thing all lumped together into one thing and people don’t have much respect for the fact that we all have our own special things going on and we all love what we do. I’m always there if someone wants to ask me about my movies, my career, my site and someone who’s interested in being fan. If you’re not a fan, you’re just an annoying person asking me questions that you could’ve looked up on Google. I’m not your porn Google.

Just let us be porn stars. It’s ok to have some mystery there. You don’t need to know everything about our jobs, just look at the final product and appreciate it for what it is. Why do you care if that orgasm was real or not? If it’s real to you then it’s real. If you didn’t believe it and it was real then it sucked.

In an interview you did with LAist, you said your favorite place to have sex in LA is the bathroom of the Beauty Bar. What’s the most challenging aspect of having sex in a public bathroom? Do you have any advice for our readers on how they can pull it off as well?

I don’t think it’s very challenging. I think you just have to not care. If you’re going to just have sex in the middle of the bar, that’s a little disrespectful to the other people at the bar. First of all if you’re at a bar you know that everyone is going to be there is of age. I think it’s important that if you’re going to have sex in public, try not to do it around kids. You don’t want to be responsible for how that kid fucks when he grows up. Let them learn that on their own. You don’t have that big of an impact on someone’s childhood. It’s also kind of illegal and wrong. Let the kid’s parents teach them about sex when they’re ready. That’s a good thing to keep in mind.

Having sex in a bathroom is kind of cool because people who are coming into the bathroom know what’s going on. They’re either going to think it’s cool or they’re going to be disgusted. They’re also going to want to listen. It’s important that if you’re going to do that that you’re going to be the type of person who’s going to get off on those kinds of responses and not be nervous or want to stop because of them.

I also think that those kinds of things can’t be planned out. It needs to be spontaneous. It needs to happen because two people are so horny that waiting is not an option. I think part of it is hiding it enough so that you’re being respectful but not hiding it so much that you’re having the quietest sex ever. There’s a difference between everyone knowing and just a few people knowing.

Someone I know was very excited when he found out I was interviewing you because you’re his favorite. How does it feel to hear someone say that you’re their favorite?

I feel very flattered when someone tells me that. I also get kind of confused because I’m so critical of myself. I’m like ‘This other person is really a lot better than me.’ I know there are a lot of other porn stars who are really pretty and amazing and to know that I’m someone’s favorite makes me really happy. I put a lot of time and energy into every aspect of my career. I’m not just showing up to work and fucking someone and taking a paycheck and going home. I plan out every piece of all my movies – from formulating the idea to where to shoot it to what to wear to who should do the makeup to how the editing should be and figuring out how to upload it and where to sell it and who to market it to. I mean, 80 percent of the porn I’ve done is something I’ve had a part in every step of the way. To know that I’ve succeeded and that people appreciate it is a really good feeling and it makes me really happy. It’s things like that that make me want to go on.
