Four New Trends for 2014
Give your wardrobe an update for the New Year. Some truly odd trends have graced men’s runways of late, and it’s time they start to be worn on the street by the masses.
Don’t let women have all the fun in flowery prints. Floral is going to be huge for men in 2014. I’m not talking about Hawaiian shirts either (sorry, they are still unfashionable). You may laugh now, but you won’t be laughing when you realize that all the fashionable guys are getting about in floral shirts and shorts- not at the same time, of course. Choose floral items in thick fabrics for a masculine look. Thin and loose material with a floral pattern looks too much like a sundress.
Go for floral prints which are quite small. As a rough guide, each flower-like picture shouldn’t be bigger than a fingernail. Big flowers printed on your clothes are tacky, at least for now. Perhaps in a few years, when floral prints on men have been overdone, huge sunflower prints will be the height of fashion- but don’t experiment with that look just yet.
Mixing prints is also going to be huge in 2014, so get creative with clashing combinations. One of the easiest ways to clash prints is to wear a stripy V-neck sweater over a patterned collared shirt.
The casual blazer has always been a style staple for men who don’t want to ruin an otherwise impeccable outfit with a heavy jacket. Blazers, especially double-breasted blazers, are going to be an essential for casual wear in 2014. As you leave your blazer open when you wear it casually, you still show the outfit beneath. Combine the floral and blazer trends by donning a floral printed double-breasted blazer for an eye-catching look.
Slightly sheer fabrics are making their debut on men’s runways. This trend might take a while to trickle down into mainstream menswear, so you have awhile to get used to the idea. If you’re not game enough to show off your chest in a see through top, try wearing a sheer sweater over a patterned shirt.
Mesh fabrics intersect with the trend towards sporty looking clothing. Even when you’re not dressed in fashion sportswear, you can still borrow one of the favorite fabrics of gym-goes.
Embrace your inner count with a dark woolen cape. Swap your heavy winter jacket for a cape for an updated look. You’ll find it’s much more comfortable, just like wearing a blanket, and is perfect for making you look a bit bigger if you’re on the skinny side. Not suited if you are tall and pale, as you will look like you’ve stepped out of a horror movie. Of course, this one is not appropriate for a hot summer day or even a slightly warm spring day. Save it for those days which are pouring with rain. You’ll be one of the few men that bothers to look fashionable and presentable in the wet weather.
