We’ve all heard it before: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” But is it really that essential to an amazing body and great health, or has everything we were told been just an old wives’ tale?

Most people have never really taken the time to sit down and think about what breakfast actually means. When you’re asleep, your body doesn’t take any sustenance for up to eight hours straight (or more if you’ve had a really long night). If you imagine that in daylight hours, you can imagine why you might wake up hungry.

Fortunately, your body responds to hours of sleeping by slowing down your metabolic rate, so that you don’t wake up during the night with vicious hunger pangs. By eating a great breakfast, you shake your metabolism awake and get all of the different parts of your engine running, ready to burn those calories and promote a hotter body.

Steel-cut oats, which usually take around 15 minutes to cook, contain more fiber than instant or rolled oat varieties, but just about any oatmeal you choose is bound to be a healthy option.

If you’ve recently been struggling to lose weight, a study suggests that eating half a grapefruit before you tackle each meal could help you to slim down quicker than usual. This is because the fruit has amazing fat-burning properties, as well as helping insulin and blood sugar levels. What’s more, grapefruit is also filling, hydrating, and packed with antioxidants dedicated to improving your immune system. For a tremendous breakfast, pack your grapefruit with protein by adding an egg or a yoghurt. However, make sure that you check with your doctor first if you’re taking any regular medications as grapefruit can interfere with some drugs.

It’s important to be careful about what you put on your bread, as well. Covering your toast in jelly and butter just adds empty calories.
