Top Five Movies of Christina Applegate
Let’s just get this out of the way, whenever I think of Christina Applegate, the first thing that comes to mind is “Married with Children.” Same with Ed O’Neill and Katey Segal, even though they are both doing great things with “Modern Family” and “Sons of Anarchy” respectively. (Plus Katey was in “Lost” and is a voice in “Futurama.” Still, Peg Bundy hovers over her.) Paired with “The Simpsons,” “Married with Children” made Sunday nights a must see night of TV in the early 90s.
So, when a TV show is still the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an actress, that probably isn’t a good sign for her filmography. Looking through her list of films on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, there is only one that gets a positive rating. Which makes the first entry on her list a bit of a surprise.
Yes, I realize that no one has seen this yet, but Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson and Jenna Fischer acting with Christina to go with the Farrelly Brothers writing and directing, this already has a better pedigree than most of Christina’s movies. Then again, it’s been ten years since the Farrellys did “Shallow Hal” so hopes can’t be too high. However, on February 25th, after all the dreck that’s been in theaters lately, I have my fingers crossed that it will be an oasis in the midst of all these bad movie releases.
Christina’s big leap to movie stardom after the success of “Married with Children” is ok at best. Still, her beauty and acting made this formulaic teen comedy at least somewhat watchable, which is more than you can say for a lot of her movies.
This movie came out at the end of last summer and is the second movie on the list to star Jason Sudeikis. Add in the fact that it also has Charlie Day (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), Jim Gaffigan, Rob Riggle as well as hottie Natalie Morales (“The Middleman”) it’s got quite a cast to help Christina and real life couple Justin Long and Drew Barrymore.
Yes, this is far from Tim Burton’s best work as a director, but it is still very fun. Christina plays the girlfriend of Jack Black’s character and is just one of the many stars in this movie, including this year’s Best Actress nominees Annette Bening and Natalie Portman, as well as previous nominee Glenn Close. I think Christina learned from all of these greats and pulled it all together to make the next film on the list.
So many things come to mind when I think of this movie. The war between the television stations, quotes like Steve Carell’s character Brick Tamland telling people he’d killed a man with a trident, the talk of it being an anchorman, not an anchor lady and many more funny moments from this incredible cast including Christina. Just writing about it makes me want to see the movie again to hear all those great lines and to laugh my ass off again.
Agree? Disagree? Which movies would make your Christina Applegate top five?
