Must-Read: Best Running Fuels
Running. We’ve spoken at length here before about how we are not exactly the biggest fans when it comes to running. We love running… if there’s a point. Give us a sport or a race or something along those lines, and we will run with the best of them. It’s only those who do that whole running-in-order-to-stay-in-shape thing that we just can’t seem to wrap out heads around. And really, its for a variety of reasons. But the main thing is that it just doesn’t seem like we have the energy to run. We have the energy to play sports — apparently, we’re fueled by the need to win! — but as far as running… we just don’t get it. But there are natural foods out there that can actually assist in this capacity by fueling your run.
And so today we’re heading over to Men’s Health where they have a listing of five fuels that can aid your running enthusiasm. For example, among the ones they suggest:
“Dried fruit is easily digested into glucose, which is what your body needs to sustain itself during a race,” says Clark. And raisins are an especially good option because they’re so small. (Dried mangos and apples can also work.) A new Louisiana State University study found that when cyclists ate raisins, their finish time, power, and perceived exertion weren’t any different from when they ate Jelly Belly Sport Beans, a specialty item. The research examined cyclists, but Stewart, the study’s lead author, says that raisins could help runners, too.
Of course, raisins! Head on over to check out the other examples of fuel that your body can use in order to get out there and get running.
