Three Surprising Alternative Calcium Sources To Milk

If you think that the only way you can get bone-building calcium is from milk, then get ready to listen. Many of us are brought up thinking that this is the case, but it simply isn?t true. Calcium is vital in strengthening bones, teeth and nerve cells, as well as aiding muscle and heart function.

Remember, how much calcium your body absorbs is just as vital as how much you consume. Things like caffeine, alcohol and refined sugars can diminish your calcium stores, potentially leaving you at risk.

On the other hand, foods high in vitamin D can actually aid in calcium absorption. So if you?re sick of drinking tons of milk to get your calcium fix, check out these three alternatives over at Breaking Muscle:

1. Catch Of The Day

Let?s start with my favorite – fish! Not just any fish, though. Look for wild-caught fatty fish, specifically salmon or sardines, canned with the skin and bones.?I like to get them packed in water or olive oil. Just be sure to read the label for any nasty additives or preservatives.

2. Get Your Greens

Dark leafy greens are another excellent source of calcium. Kale, broccoli, bok choy, turnip greens, you get the picture.?Chopped kale tops the list with about 100mg of calcium in one cup, while broccoli provides 21mg per half cup.

Adding these foods throughout the day, though, can really add up. Try stirring in some finely chopped kale as you scramble your eggs or throwing some fresh bok choy and broccoli into your next stir-fry.

Finding a good source of calcium is a lot easier than you may think. For people who don?t like dairy or are lactose intolerant, it?s very important that you work some of these foods into your diet. In many cases, non-dairy sources can be better for you because they contain various other vitamins and minerals.
