The Awesome Health Benefits of Walking
Most of us neglect walking, thinking of it as just a means of transportation, something that can be easily replaced with a car, bus, or taxi. When we think of exercise, on the other hand, we think of running, we think of lifting weights, of going to the gym or getting into special clothes.
But walking can exercise are not exclusive, and in today’s environment, we’d be good to make better use of them. We live in a world where sitting is becoming more predominant, we stare at computer screens for work,?we travel in cars, we lounge in front of the TV to relax. This is all having a negative impact on our health, so much so that a simple such as?going for a walk can become?a huge benefit. The Huffington Post also notes that cities should be making an effort to make walking an easier activity:
Vivek Murthy notes “an average of 22 minutes a day of physical activity – such as brisk walking – can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes” as well as other debilitating chronic diseases.
Dr. Murthy told on overflowing crowd of 500 people from 44 states that, “we need to improve infrastructure in communities to make walking easier.” It’s about justice, he emphasized. It’s about making sure “everyone in America has a good shot at being healthy.”
It’s time to change our perspective of this forgotten exercise, it should become something we do often, and not just because we need to get somewhere. Check out the full post for all the details.
